Local swimmer takes on the world
Boksburg's Caydon Muller must have hated the day a heel injury forced him out of football.
This, however, did not stop him from continuing with sport and excelling in it.
He chose to take up swimming, and it has proven to be a blessing in disguise.
He has risen quickly to the top of the sport and now has been selected for the World Junior Championships in Dubai.
He will leave on August 26.
The 18-year-old is excited about the selection.
“It was great to be selected, because I had been waiting for it for so long,” he says.
He will be swimming the 100m freestyle, an event which he is already ranked fourth in South Africa at senior level.
Muller, who goes to school at the Tuks High Performance Centre (HPC) in Pretoria, has plans to be an international star.
“I want to go all the way. My goal is to reach the Olympics.”
Next year Muller will be looking to qualify for the Commonwealth Games. He feels he can achieve such a lofty goal if he trains hard twice a day, six days a week.
He feels that HPC has helped his development as a swimmer.
“They focus a lot on technique and fitness, so it has helped a lot,” he says.
A golf day has been organised to raise funds for the swimmer when he goes to Dubai.
The event will be held on August 14, at the Ebotse Golf Course.
