Kicking into national colours

Goju Karate Academy’s sensei Marius Madgwick and Gareth Hird were recently awarded their national colours.

Madgwick was chosen to represent South Africa at the Zone 6 Championships in Namibia, where he won a bronze medal for team Kata.

The Zone 6 Championships is one of the elite tournaments held in Africa that attracts top athletes from countries such as Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Angola.

The sensei and his team have won every local tournament that they have competed in this year, resulting in them becoming national champions and being selected for the South African Team.

They are training hard towards being selected for the WKF World Championships next year.

Hird was chosen to represent South Africa at the WKF Youth Cup in Corfu, Greece.

He took part in a week long training seminar with instructors from all over Europe and competed against more than 19 countries from Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.

He has had a very successful year.

Earlier this year he graded for his black belt, and he is ranked third in South Africa for individual kata and his team are the National Junior Team kata champions.

They will be representing South Africa at the African Championships in Tunisia in August, and are training hard to be selected for the WKF Junior World Championships in Spain later this year.
