Owls lose season opener against Vereeniging

The hosts could not have asked for a better start with their five tries also earning them a bonus point, which can prove critical in the business end of the campaign.

TW Boksburg was handed a 15-31 loss by Vereeniging in their Valke Peregrine League kick-off match in Vereeniging on April 7.

All of fullback Carlyle Hendriks, outside centre Hendrik Smith, wing Wian Koekemoer, lock forward Wouter van den Berg and replacement back Isak Burger crossed the try-line for Vereeniging as they outscored the Owls by five tries to three.

Owls’ own outside centre David Woolls, who just can’t stay off the scoring board, grabbed a brace of tries in response for the visitors.

Left winger Adriaan van der Nest converted one of those tries and also added a penalty.

In the kicking department for the hosts, fly-half Erjee Heenop buried three conversions before the hosts walked away with a thoroughly deserved win.

Francois Erasmus’ men face another tough encounter this week (April 21) as they travel to Springs.
