Progress in plans to complete PSL season
The remaining matches will likely be played in July if the plan is approved by government
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has identified the North West and Gauteng provinces as ideal destinations for player camps in a bid to complete what is remaining of the 2019/20 South African top tier footballing season.
Sun City resort has been eyed as a perfect destination to accommodate all 16 clubs in the PSL and 16 from the GladAfrica Championship (second tier) in a major camp, as part of the PSL’s plan.
The plan is set to be presented to the government and should it be approved, the remaining matches will likely be played in July.
FIFA, football’s global controlling body, has given football leagues around the world a deadline of July 31 to complete their respective domestic leagues. The PSL also has a back-up plan should moving the action to North West not fall through, it is to place clubs in different hotels between Pretoria and Johannesburg.
Sun City, however, does lead the race to host the remainder of the season with its isolated location guaranteeing the simpler option to ensure that the PSL’s overall plan meets the government lockdown regulations.
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Olympia Park and the Moruleng Stadium would be the venues highly favoured for usage should the North West option be approved.
In Gauteng, Soccer City Stadium, Orlando Stadium, Rand Stadium, Bidvest Stadium and Makhulong Stadium in Johannesburg, Lucas Moripe Stadium and Loftus Stadium in Pretoria provide the PSL with plenty of venue options.
