Owls skipper: Current situation is frustrating
Back to square one as sporting fraternity pins its hopes on government
Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club captain Henry Pike has voiced his frustration at the continued lack of rugby action as the coronavirus pandemic continues to put the country’s amateur sport at a halt.
Despite the continued presence of the virus, there was a sense of optimism, particularly in the county’s sporting arena, with hope that a solution of some sort would be found to effectively deal with the pandemic for the sporting fraternity to begin to work towards the norm.
Instead, the second wave of the virus has further cast doubt about the near future of amateur rugby. Pike, and the thousands of rugby players across the country, can only continue to wait for the unknown and keep fit.
You would have to go as far back as early last year (before the lockdown got underway in March) for the last time the Owls stepped on to a rugby pitch – a scenario that has left the Owls skipper and the rest of his teammates itching for some rugby action.
“The current situation is quite tiring and it’s really starting to get frustrating because I think we as club players and members want to play a little ball and just get back on the pitch,” said the skipper.
“I think for the mental health and just all the negativity that is going on right now, returning to the pitch would be amazing and really positive for even just to get on the field and just play or do something.”
Owls executive positions yet to be filled
Following the departures of the club’s vice-chairperson Sean Scheepers and treasurer Charles Tewitz, the club is yet to fill the vacant positions.
This is according to chairperson Willem Botes.
“We’ve lost two great guys in Sean and Charles; we didn’t replace them yet due to these uncertain times,” explained Botes.
“We can’t practice or play rugby: we are waiting for the South African Rugby Union and the government to make up their minds about sport. We feel the pain of not playing.”
