Youngsters shine at CGA provincials
City Stadium wraps up another successful meeting.
Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) continued with its smooth restart of the 2021 athletics season with the hosting of the provincial championships at the Boksburg City Stadium on March 27.
The event was held under strict Covid-19 regulations and again played out without any supporters.
Following a successful hosting of five previous meetings since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Boksburg Stadium, which has been the main venue since the restart of the athletics calendar, has seen some exceptional performances from athletes.
The provincials were no different, with athletes giving it 100 per cent as the possibility of qualifying for the national championships dangled in front of them.
Boksburg resident Pieter Moller was one of many who enjoyed success on a chilled afternoon as he left the rest of the field in his wake in the first heat of the u-15 100m race in a time of 13.76.
He did, however, finish second overall behind Cayden Ramage, whose second heat time read 13.72.

Angela Monyekgope from Kempton Park was another u-15 athlete who starred at the mecca of Boksburg sports in the girls’ triple jump. Her effort of 9.56m saw her as the last girl standing in an event that had no competition.
The youngsters look set to join the likes of fellow promising athlete Lythe Pillay at a national level, who ran an outstanding time of 21:17 in the 200m during a recent CGA track and field meeting.
In the men’s 5 000m, it was usual suspects of Ryan Mphahlele and Mzazi Gladwin who took position one and two respectively. The two rivals finished in times of 14:14.05 and 14:15.10 respectively.
In the bigger picture, the main focus has been to prepare athletes for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, which are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8.The provincials meeting was streamed on Back Track Sports.
