Businessman comes to the rescue of ERU

A local businessman has come to the aid of the East Rand United Rugby Club (ERU), which has been struggling financially after severing ties with its main sponsor Phakisa Holdings last year.

The businessman will assist the club with playing equipment and transport to and from away matches.

The chairperson of the club, Marius de Vos, has appealed for support from other local businesses.
“We need support as the club is not only concentrating on the game of rugby but also on developing the youth of Reiger Park and surrounding areas.”

The club has faced many setbacks in the last two years because of Covid-19 and de Vos is hopeful that this year will be better for the team.

“We want to recover from the Covid-19 setbacks, remain resilient as a club and return to the field stronger than before.
“We want to honour our 12 super league fixtures with at least three teams and remain competitive and fight for the top four in the league.
“We also want to have fun and be a sporting family to members of our community, broader East Rand and the rest of South Africa.”

The club has welcomed recruits and de Vos said they will continue with rebuilding the team as they have lost a few senior players.

“We have welcomed some new talent over the last couple of weeks and have received a commitment from about 40 loyal players who will return to training in the next couple of weeks.”

De Vos has invited anyone interested in the game of rugby to join the club in Reiger Park.
“All rugby players, male and female, who are looking for new opportunities or want to play an exciting brand of rugby, are welcome to join us. We practise on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 18:15 to 19:45.”

De Vos has announced that local businessman Cyril Reeby has joined the club as deputy chairperson and will be in charge of the club’s marketing.
