Tennis tournament hosted to keep pensioners fit

The players said their club provides them with the chance to compete, and this is good for their bodies and minds.

The Witfield Wednesday Tennis Club, which was established in 2008, held a friendly tennis tournament for its members on January 9.

The players commended their coach for organising the tournament and said they have been taking part in these tournaments on Wednesdays for a few weeks and are enjoying it immensely.

Member Les Robertson (75) said the club is the greatest one he has ever played for.

“I came here to play tennis because I love it and I enjoy myself. I enjoy my tennis because I play with lovely people who motivate me – they are always praising my strokes.

“I have played tennis for 55 years, but now I’m enjoying it even more,” said Robertson.
Gerhard Bothma (71), the coach of the tennis club, which is made up of members aged 60 and above, said he hosts such tournaments to keep himself and his players fit.

“Our tennis team is specifically made up of older players because I don’t want to see elderly people who are stressed and inactive.

“They can reminisce about their past while enjoying themselves on the tennis court.
“I encourage other old people who are sitting at home to come and join this tennis club. “Our fee is only R30 per month, which includes many tournaments. “I started my coaching career in 1974 and became a professional coach in 1983. I have never looked back,” said Bothma.

The players said their club provides them with the chance to compete, and this is good for their bodies and minds.

The treasurer of the club, Vic Naude, said he joined the team 15 years ago and will never quit because he is enjoying himself.

“I enjoy being here with my teammates. We do enjoy each other’s company,” said Naude.
