Arch-rivals split points in a hard-fought match

“We could have gotten maximum points if we focused on protecting our lead.”

Boksburg ‘Blues’ FC Vets and GPMI FC drew 4-4 when they clashed on March 7 at the main Boksburg Stadium in the Easterns Local Football Association League.

The home team kicked off the game on a high tempo in the first few minutes of the match, putting pressure on GPMI. The Blues reached the 18-yard box of the visiting team several times but failed to capitalise.

The visiting team’s midfielder, Rodney Jiran, pulled off a powerful long-range shot that beat the goalkeeper in the 20th minute. GPMI slowly gained momentum.

The Blues then relied on counterattacks. Philemon Dolo, midfielder for the Blues, almost scored but his cracking shot was denied by the upper pole.

Just after halftime, GPMI carried on where they left off and scored the second goal through Aden Santiti.
Boksburg FC’s striker Glen Theron responded instantly and scored for the home side, but the visiting side seemed unstoppable as they scored their third goal through Randy Govender.

Boksburg still showed character as Theron scored the second goal for the Blues. Randy Govender scored the fourth for GPMI.

In the last minutes of the match, Boksburg FC’s left-winger Elton Steenkamp scored the third goal and later the fourth goal that forced a draw.
