Runners have fun on Human Rights Day

Qhubeka Athletics Club held its second fun run in Sunward Park on Human Rights Day.

The event, which consisted of a 5km and 8km route, was filled with joy as residents from across Boksburg came to attend in large numbers.

The club founder, Benzi Tenza, said he did not expect such huge support from the local residents.

“To my surprise and the whole committee, the response from the people was positive. In other races, people are attracted by what they will get but with us, we only went there with medals and had no prizes nor goodie bags.

“What amazed me was that we got people from all races and also people from other clubs,” said Tenza.

Runner Ziyavuya Mwahla, who covered a distance of 8km in 30 minutes, said it was a fun run.

“It was an opportunity to prove myself.”

Wandisile Nkwalase, a runner from Adventist Athletics Club, said the club lived up to its name.

“The organisation of the run was amazing, the marshals were there at every corner to give directions and to make sure no one gets lost. The route was neither hard nor easy. We can learn from Qhubeka Athletics Club,” said Nkwalase.

Tenza said their event on Human Rights Day served as an encouragement for people to participate in more races.
