Coaches offered coaching lessons

The seminar was held for the first time in Boksburg.

Ekurhuleni sports coaches received training at a coaching seminar, Talent Identification and Methodology Training, hosted by the Marcus Mashilo Foundation in partnership with the coach of Boksburg FC’s U7 and Vets, Ernest Seforo.

The seminar was held at Boksburg City Stadium on July 3, led by Marcus Mashilo a goalkeeper coach of Mamelodi Sundowns and founder of the Marcus Mashilo Foundation.

Mashilo said they hosted the seminar because they wanted coaches of teams playing in the local leagues to understand their profession, so they can be recognised by teams playing in the South African domestic leagues.

“Players and parents were included in the seminar. Local football coaches have a passion and desire to coach, but most of them are not known because they didn’t go to a coaching school.

“We aim to change that perception. I formed the Marcus Mashilo Foundation to give back to communities and impart my experience as a goalkeeper coach to others.

“All seminar attendees received relevant and important information about the soccer fraternity in South Africa,” explained Mashilo. It was important for the coaches to be at the seminar because they are the ones who create solid structures for the players to succeed in their careers.

“I benefited from being part of the seminar, because of the feedback I got from the attendees. I got to know my weaknesses and strengths as a coach, and I’m sure the other coaches recognised their strengths and weaknesses as well. This coaching seminar was empowering.”

Seforo said he learned how important it is to understand the players in his teams.

“They made me realise that all players are not the same in terms of development. As a coach, you have to let the players make their own decisions in any soccer match.

“I have learned that you mustn’t be hard on yourself as a coach. The seminar reached my expectations. What was interesting is that we also learned that coaches have to be polite, patient and respect one another.

“The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper coach said we must invest a lot in team spirit and building, which is what I’m going to focus on from now,” concluded Seforo.
