Firefighters on fire at Comrades

The firefighters will be partaking in next year's Comrades Marathon race.

Eight City of Ekurhuleni DEMS firefighters ran the Comrades Marathon on June 11.

Kamogelo Phogole and Enie Manzini won silver medals and Kwena Mangala and Humbulani Makhari achieved Bill Rowan medals. Manzini also achieved her green number.

Jane Seema attained a Robert Mtshali medal and Manelisi Ndlamlenze a Vic Clapham medal.

Two of the team members did not complete the race.

Papi Msimang was cut off at the 81km mark and Mafelela Khoza at the 60km.

“This was 10th Comrades and I am proud to have improved my time. In my first race, I obtained a bronze medal.

“From the second race to the sixth race, I got Bill Rowan medals. Then I attained Isavel Roche-Kelly medals with my last medal being a silver. I had a good race this year, but I’m looking forward to improving my finishing time,” said Manzini.

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said the department is proud of the team.

“Firefighters are required to be fit, and these Comrades participants are in line with the standard requirement. A healthy body produces a healthy mind, which is something needed in their jobs,” he said.
