St Dunstan’s rowers come second at national event

St Dunstan’s College Rowing Club claimed a silver medal after coming second in the mixed schools event during the South African Schools Championships at Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria from March 1 to 3.

The college scored 84 points to secure the runner-up position, behind winners Somerset College, which scored 108 points for the gold. Peterhouse was third with 23 points.

They sent a team of 19 rowers and returned from the regatta with one silver and two bronze medals.
Shane Mearns and Michael Gruar won the bronze medals in the JM/BU19 doubles.

St Benedict’s College won the boys’ overall championship with 447 points for their 30th title in a row. King Edward VII High School was second with 256 points, and St Alban’s College completed the top three with 234 points.

St Mary’s School Waverly claimed the top spot in the girls’ overall category with 413 points. St Andrew’s Girls School were second with 340 points, and St Stithians Girls College was third with 242 points.

The event, which marked the end of the rowing season, attracted over 1 500 athletes representing over 35 schools across SA and three from Zimbabwe.

The head coach of the RMB national squad, Tiago Loureiro, said the event served as a platform for talented athletes to be identified for scholarships and the national team and to become future Olympians.

The head of the event’s organising committee, Michelle Kleer, congratulated all the participants, spectators and sponsors for making the event a success.

“The South African Schools Championships exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship, dedication, and excellence,” said Kleer.
