The Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) invites runners, walkers and children of all fitness levels to the Benoni Northerns Night Race, sponsored by Jan L Jordaan Attorneys Inc. on October 23.

This much-loved community event offers 5km and 10km events through the streets of Benoni, with festive water stops, music and lights along the way.

For the third consecutive year, Jan L Jordaan Attorneys Inc. is sponsoring prizes for schools.

There is a R5 000 prize for the school with the most online entries in the 5km event and another R5 000 for the school with the first 10 finishers in the 10km.

“Young athletes representing their school must wear school PT or sports kits for their school to be eligible.

Children must be 15 years old to do the 10km. There is no age restriction for the 5km but children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult,” said club administrator and race organiser Kerry Webb.

Last year, Farrarmere Primary won the prize for the school with the most online entrants in the 5km and Benoni High School had the first 10 athletes completing the 10km.

This year, the 5km will be electronically timed along with the 10km for the first time.

“This is a forward-thinking innovation on the part of BNAC to accommodate the 5km field which has been triple the size of the 10km field for the past three years. Typically, fun run (5km) events are not timed.

“We manually timed the 5km in 2022 and 2023 but due to the growing field and with a focus on delivering a real-road-race experience for young athletes, we have introduced electronic timing on the 5km this year, while keeping the entry fee the same as previous years,” Webb said.

The BNAC Night Race is a proudly local event, with club members working together to make it happen, locals have volunteered to host water stations and others show their support.

“Water tables will be hosted by Jan L. Jordaan Inc. Attorneys, Stockton Properties, RE/MAX Randgro, and RE/MAX Dazzle.

“A big part of what makes the BNAC Night Race so special is the residents of Benoni who light up their driveways and stand outside to cheer on the runners. BNAC hopes to see this Benoni spirit shining on race day.”

Online entries are available until October 16 at www.bnac.co.za.

Manual entries are available at the Benoni Northerns Sports Shop at the club between 09:00 and 17:00 on weekdays, and from 09:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays until October 19.

Late entries will be taken at Jan L. Jordaan Inc. Attorneys is situated at 1 Forster Street, Rynfield on October 21 and 25 from 09:00 to 15:00, and on race day from 09:00 at Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds.
