Snyman victorious at Carnival City race

She clinched the title in a time of 01:37:29.

Alberton resident Deneke Snyman unexpectedly won the women’s half-marathon at the MNS Attorneys Carnival City Marathon on May 1.

Claiming her first ever victory in the distance, the Alberton Athletic Club runner clocked 01:37:29 to triumph in the women’s race at the Carnival City Sports grounds.

Claudia Figueria of Bedfordview Country Club was 01:44 off the pace after crossing the line in 01:39:12 for second place. Veronica Warmington finished 03:48 after her Bedfordview teammate to complete the top three.

“The vibe was nice and water stations were great. I’m grateful for the victory,” Snyman said.

Despite running uncomfortably because of an injury niggle that’s been bugging her for a while, Snyman persevered through the agony. She maintained a consistent pace to cover the first 13km in the lead in 59:24, running at a pace of 04:39min/km.

Veronica Warmington.

She had opened a healthy 03:09 lead on the second-placed Warmington, who passed 13km in 01:02:26. Warmington was seven seconds ahead of Figueria at that that point.

But Figueria launched her attack after 15km to leave her teammate choking on dust in her bid to catch Snyman. She ran an incredible second-half, covering the last 8km in 36:40 at blistering 04:25min/km, after going through 13km in 01:02:33.
That was a futile attempt, however, as the Alberton run

ner was too far ahead. Despite dropping the pace slightly in the last 8km after a faster first-half, Snyman’s 38:06 was still enough to finish 01:44 ahead of Figueria to secure the bragging rights.

She admitted afterwards that her victory was unexpected, saying this was as a source of motivation and inspiration to young women who are showing potential in the sport.

“I feel great. The weather was nice. The course was entirely flat, with a few inclines. It’s unexpected to be honest. I’m grateful. The Lord carried me through the pain,” said Snyman.

Sharing her love for running, Snyman explained that she started running at the age of seven and this achievement has given her energy to work hard.

“Running is in me. I’m really grateful to be able to run because there are more people who can’t really run. I have gratitude that I’m able to run and stay healthy.”

Among some of her goals for the rest of the year is remaining consistent.
