Benoni Northerns Fossils hit their stride against Titans
This was the Fossils' second win and it pushed them to six points and fourth on the log table.
Lara Jones grabbed a hat-trick to help the Benoni Northerns Fossils to a one-sided 6-1 victory against ERU Titans Ladies at the Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association (EGHA) astro on June 7.
Jones scored a brace in the first half and added her third goal in the second chukka as the Fossils secured their second win, moving to fourth place on six points in the EGHA Outdoor Hockey Ladies Premier League log after four games.
The Titans, meanwhile, remain rooted at the bottom of the table with three points, having won once and lost four times in their five league matches.
The Fossils asserted their dominance early but had to wait until the 11th minute before Cailyn Jade Nienaber opened the scoring from a well-executed short corner.
Jones made it two four minutes later from another short corner. Nienaber played the ball to her, and she drilled it low past the Titans’ defence into the net.
The Fossils were not done, racing to a 3-0 lead with Jones grabbing her second goal of the day in the 20th minute, before Jessica Cloete pulled one back for the Titans a minute later.

The forward received the ball from deep, dribbled past her marker, and entered the circle on the right side.
The Fossils’ keeper rushed out, but Cloete reacted quickly and scored from a tight angle to make it 3-1.
However, the Fossils responded quickly as Jane Bird made it four in the 25th minute, and they went into the break with a 4-1 lead.
Cynthia Marques added her name to the scoresheet early in the second chukka before Jones grabbed her hat-trick in the 57th minute, earning the Fossils a well-deserved three points.
