Kungawo Madikane, an 11-year-old cross-country sensation from Ramaphosa, is making his mark as one of Gauteng’s brightest young athletes.
A Lakeside Primary School learner and member of the Boxer Athletics Club, Kungawo has swept aside the competition this season with a string of gold medal performances.
According to the sport co-ordinator of the school, Cheslin van Stade, his winning streak began at the Boksburg Cross Country League meetings, where he stormed to first place in all three races.
“From there, he continued his dominance at the Boksburg Championships, once again crossing the finish line ahead of the pack. His consistency and determination carried him into the district championships, where he added another gold to his growing collection.

“On August 30, Kungawo achieved one of his biggest victories yet when he won the provincial championships at Curro Sagewood in Midrand. Facing Gauteng’s best young runners, he once again proved his class by securing the top podium spot.”

Van Stade said this result earned him a coveted place in the Gauteng team for the National Championships in White River, Mpumalanga, on October 4.
“Kungawo’s talent extends beyond school athletics. As part of the Boxer Athletics Club, he has been a dominant figure on the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) circuit.
“At the CGA League meetings, he qualified for the CGA Provincial Championships at Germiston Soccer Stadium on August 16, where he added yet another gold medal to his tally.
“His performances also earned him the chance to compete at the prestigious ASA Cross Country Championships, held on September 6 at Kees Taljaard Stadium in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.”

The school sports co-ordinator praised the youngster’s achievements, saying, “Kungawo has shown tremendous talent, but what truly sets him apart is his discipline and humility. He is a role model to his peers, and we are incredibly proud of what he has achieved so far. This is just the beginning of a bright future.”
At home, his family shares the same pride. His mother, Connie Madikane, highlighted Kungawo’s passion and determination.
“This is something Kungawo truly loves. He enjoys running and has often said he wants to be like Caster Semenya one day. We are proud of his determination and passion.”
