East Rand Kayak hosts successful night race

The race included a 14km main race and a 4km event for the juniors.

Michael Stewart and David Gerber took top honours during the East Rand Kayak (ERK) Canoe Club Night Race at Homestead on November 15.

Stewart and Gerber completed the 14km race, which was seven laps of 2km, in 1:04.

Kyle Armdoff and David Miller secured the second spot after finishing two minutes behind the winners in 1:06, while a three-man kayak, which included the ERK’s Richard Tandy and Jonathan Nel, was third.

The 4km junior U12 race was clinched by Ruoxi Hao from Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, who clocked 23:28. Luminathi Mnyande from the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club (SCARC) was second in 26:51, and Amile Mzolo, the first female paddler across the line, was third overall in 27:14.

Jennie Dallas, Gauteng Canoe Union’s (GCU) media liaison, congratulated the ERK for hosting a successful event despite the inclement weather.
