Action galore on opening day of SPAR National Champs
This is the first time the tournament is being hosted in Ekurhuleni. It will conclude on December 6.
The Ekurhuleni U21 player Nkuli Limako exited court five at Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen, dripping in sweat, after giving an outstanding performance against Tshwane U21 on the opening day of the SPAR National Championships on court five on December 1.
The lanky goal defender made crucial interceptions and protected the circle with precision as she looked to make her mark in the tournament, which is being held in Ekurhuleni for the first time.
Reflecting on the opening day, the Benoni High School learner said the competition was significant because it gave her the opportunity to compete on a national stage.

“This tournament is important for the growth of netball as it brings together a lot of teams from across the country. It means a lot to me because I can showcase my talent, and I’m very excited to be here,” said Limako.
The first day saw intense action on the Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen and Laerskool Concordia courts, with fans buzzing with excitement as their teams fought bravely to win maximum points.
Lee-Anne Gleeson and Chantè Boshoff said the action on the field was exciting.
“The vibe is nice, and the netball is good,” said Gleeson.
Boshoff added, “It’s an amazing experience and an opportunity to meet new people and see new players.”
Brendan Reid from the North West said, “The tournament has always been close to my heart because my wife is taking part in it. We are proudly supporting Royal Bafokeng. It’s going to be a good tournament.”
A total of 114 teams from 52 districts, including the Ekurhuleni A and B sides and the Ekurhuleni U21 team, are competing in this tournament, with Johannesburg gunning for a fourth title after clinching the last three trophies.

A total of 68 teams are contesting the senior division, including the Botswana national team, who are using the competition to prepare for the upcoming Africa Netball Cup in Malawi.
The tournament will conclude on Saturday (December 6). The tournament continues tomorrow from 07:00.
