Meyer appointed backline coach for Valke Platteland tournament team

He will represent the club alongside six players selected to represent the Valke in the competition.

Boksburg Rugby Club head coach Willie Meyer’s successful season has been rewarded with an appointment as the backline coach of the Valke team for the OBARO Noordvaal Platteland tournament in Nylstroom.

Meyer guided the Owls to their best finish in years in the Valke Merlin League, narrowly missing the semi-finals, while also leading the club to its first silverware in years by winning the President’s Cup plate final against Benoni Northerns.

His impact extended beyond the club, with six Boksburg players selected for the Valke Platteland team, including four travelling players and two non-travelling players. The team will compete in the Platteland tournament at Hoërskool Nylstroom.

Meyer’s appointment as backline coach adds another achievement to a season that has highlighted the progress being made at Boksburg Rugby Club.

“I always said after playing rugby that I wanted to become a coach,” Meyer said.

Christopher Coleridge, Eugene van der Merwe, coach Willie Meyer, Lwazi ‘Beast’ Nkateko Mthethwa and Takkies van Staden will represent the Boksburg Owls.

“Coaching doesn’t fill everything you want. You want to become better and better, just like when you were a rugby player and wanted to reach the next level.

“For me, it is a very proud moment. I want to keep building on what I have to offer the players, the community and the union. I am very proud of myself, but also proud of the guys who made it. This is not just for me; it is for Boksburg.”

The coach believes the selection of six players demonstrates the quality of the club’s playing group and the value of its coaching structures.

“Everyone at the club is very proud. We want people to see that our coaches can also represent at a higher level. You are not just coming to the club to have fun. We have proper coaches in the system, and we want the guys to receive proper coaching.”

Meyer also highlighted the potential of fellow coach Danie Schultz, whom he believes could be among the next Boksburg representatives to coach at the Platteland level.

While the appointment represents a significant personal milestone, Meyer remains focused on making a lasting contribution to the sport.

“I want to go as far as I can. I am not 100% sure what the future holds, but for now, I want to enjoy the moment and add value where I can,” he said.

“I always say I want to add value. How will you be remembered? That is what I want to leave behind. My children must look back and say, ‘My dad represented and gave back.’”
