CBC Saturday 1st XI captain Alexander Eliasov has hailed the previous Eastern Cricket club season as one to remember after his side completed an unbeaten league campaign to claim the 1st League championship title.

The team started the season in impressive fashion, defeating reigning champions Etwatwa before building momentum with a string of convincing victories.

Jacques Slabbert and Jhaun Meyer regularly provided explosive starts at the top of the order, while JP Botha, Martin de Bruyn and several others made important contributions throughout the campaign.

One of the season’s standout performances came after CBC were reduced to 30/4. Botha and Juan Ungerer responded with a magnificent 127-run partnership, with Botha going on to score his maiden century for the club. CBC finished on 264/6, their fifth-highest total ever.

The bowling attack proved equally formidable. Slabbert produced a remarkable spell of 4/2 in six overs, setting a new CBC record for the most economical bowling spell. Eliasov also made an immediate impact with 2/2 deliveries.

CBC’s consistency continued throughout the campaign, with contributions from Leon Van Vuuren, Tennant Watson, Andrew Bosman and Francois du Preez helping the side maintain their unbeaten record.

Their final league fixture took them to Kwa-Thema for CBC’s first-ever encounter in the Hub. On a difficult batting surface, debutant Stormy McLeod showed composure at the top of the order as CBC posted 170.

The bowlers then produced another dominant display, reducing the opposition to 30/7 before Aaron Clack finished off the tail.

The result sealed an unbeaten league campaign and the 1st League Championship title.

CBC then turned their attention to the Daisy Cup, where they produced several impressive performances despite ultimately missing out on the semi-finals.

They opened the tournament with a convincing victory, earning two bonus points after bowling their opponents out and completing the chase inside 16 overs. Van Vuuren was named Man of the Match after starring with both bat and ball.

CBC followed that with another dominant bowling display against Prestige, bowling them out for just 14 runs. Quinton Fogarty claimed a five-wicket haul to earn the MVP award.

Although CBC lost their final match and narrowly missed qualification for the semi-finals, Eliasov believes there was plenty to celebrate.

“The league campaign was outstanding,” he said, highlighting the commitment of the entire squad.

The captain said the season was ultimately about more than results, with experienced players, youngsters and debutants all making valuable contributions.
