Parkrand TikTok influencer a big hit
The talented content creator describes himself as an animal lover, who enjoys spending time with his dog, Pappito, as well as exercising and socialising
21Parkrand’s Roberto de Gouveia, also known as KingBerto, is a well-known South African TikTok influencer, social media content creator and brand ambassador.
He enjoys 1.1 million followers on TikTok (@k1ngbert0) and close to 50 000 followers on Instagram (@k1ngbert0).
The 26-year-old tech enthusiast and role model is one of the top 10 biggest TikTok stars in the country and has worked with major brands, like Lamborghini, POPL, Levi’s, Starbucks, Universal Music and Samsung.
KingBerto, who refers to his followers as #TheRoyals, was born and raised in Germiston/Boksburg by a single mother with whom he still has a close relationship. He attended Rynfield Primary School and matriculated from Benoni High School.
His intention was to upload TikTok videos as a way to pass the time, but when one of his first videos went viral, he found himself in the role of social media influencer and soon realised people wanted to hear what he has to say.
The Advertiser caught up with the influencer to find out more about him.
Did you choose the name (handle), k1ngbert0?
I did. It was born from the fact that my name is Roberto and I have a few friends who call me Berto (most of them call me Robbie). The “king” part of the name came from when TikTok used to be called Musical.ly, before the amalgamation. Musical.ly used to use crowns as a means to verify an account and when I had just started out I liked the idea of being crowned, so I decided to call myself KingBerto.
What is your favourite TikTok challenge?
There are so many challenges on TikTok at the moment, so it’s difficult to choose. If I was forced to choose I’d like to say the #WipeItDown Challenge because I feel like people really explored their creativity with that challenge.
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with on a TikTok video in the future?
I love meeting new people and I enjoy hanging out with old friends, so collaborations are always awesome, but my favourite person to collaborate with is my girlfriend and fellow TikToker Chané. She will always be my favourite collab partner.
How much time do you spend on making TikTok videos and is it profitable?
I try to make videos as often as I can but they sometimes do take a little long, especially because I can be quite critical of myself and I want my videos to come out perfect. In South Africa, there is no “creator fund”, which means unlike Americans we don’t get paid for views, at least not yet.
How regularly do you have to make videos?
There is no set standard for how many videos I’m forced to post in a week, although I have received messages from my followers asking me to post videos when I am missing for a couple of days. I try to make videos at least once every two to three days, which can be difficult because I have a full-time job at a liquor store.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get a lot of my inspiration from my ‘for you page’ of TikTok, and I try to recreate or create my own version of certain videos. Otherwise, I get my inspiration from my everyday life, something that happens at home or something my cousin says or just random things in general.
Is it possible to gain many followers in a short time?
Yes, definitely, I was on the app for about a month and a bit when I got my first 10k followers. If I can do it, anyone can.
Any advice for aspirant TikTokers?
Lighting is a huge need in videos. I often see some really funny concepts on TikTok that get very minimal views because the video was poorly lit. Lights are your best friend.
Give us a few interesting facts about yourself?
I have no feeling in my right pinky finger from an injury I suffered in high school. I live in Boksburg (so it’s pretty cool to be featured in the Advertiser).
Is there anything you would like to add that you feel is important?
If people could follow me on all my social media that would be awesome (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube: k1ngbert0).
A final word?
Just be kind to everyone, you never know what they are dealing with.
