Cancer survivor says staying positive is key

She survived cancer.

A cancer ambassador and survivor Sergeant Basani Mehala, who has been living with cancer for nine years, believes that every type of cancer can be beaten with a positive mindset and support.

Basani was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 believes she survived by staying positive and because of the support of family and friends.

“When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was shattered, sad and confused. I underwent treatment and my doctor, Carol Benn at Milpark Hospital, said cancer medication heals cancer on a 30% ratio and the other 70% healing ratio must be stimulated by an individual’s thought patterns,” said Basani.

“I wanted to survive, so I started to think positively, as advised by my doctor. I went through chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy and I survived. These treatments were the most difficult period of my life, but I had to stay positive.”

After winning the treatment battle, which weakened her body, Basani started looking at life differently and now enjoys each day as if it’s her last.

“I was also appointed as a cancer ambassador after surviving. My role as a cancer ambassador is to motivate people who are newly diagnosed. I motivate them to stay positive and share my experience because most people become depressed and think they are going to die. People must not be afraid of cancer. It can be beaten and you can live a fruitful life.

Basani said her diagnosis didn’t come as a surprise as her grandmother had died of cervical cancer.

She, however, urged others to regularly screen for cancer, even if they don’t have a family history of cancer.

“People must understand that every living person has cancer cells, but they are not active. A small thing can activate them. I would like to urge women older than 40 to do regular mammograms and pap smears.”
