SWS officer honoured with emotional final call as community mourns fallen hero

The memorial drive, marked by sirens, tears and a powerful show of solidarity, closed with one final message: Cameron’s service will not be forgotten.

Boksburg came together on November 15 to pay an emotional final tribute to Jan Cameron, a 49-year-old Spot Watch Security (SWS) officer who was fatally shot while responding to a business robbery on Middle Road in Bartlett on November 6.

Members of the security industry, CPF structures, and the local community participated in a memorial convoy through parts of Boksburg, their sirens wailing in honour of a man widely remembered as fearless, committed, and deeply compassionate.

When the convoy arrived at GodFirst Family Church, Kim Joubert of the Boksburg North CPF performed a final radio call that left mourners in tears:
“Jan Cameron, your shift is over. We have the watch from here. Thank you for your dedication, for putting your life on the line for other people. We thank you and we honour you.”

AJ Smith, SWS manager, described Cameron’s generosity and courage: “Even when he didn’t have much, he always gave. He was afraid of nothing, but had one of the softest hearts you could find. Many now feel an emptiness that nothing can fill.”

Known affectionately as Orama for his love of the roadhouse, Cameron touched countless lives- from colleagues to clients.

Smith added: “Clients have told me how much they are going to miss him. He always waited for them at home and protected them. He was a rock.”

Cameron’s family remains devastated. His sister, Jakkie Hickman, said: “It’s still unbelievable. We’re trying to pick up the pieces. He was an amazing person who would go to great lengths for others. His reported final words were: ‘Tell my wife and kids that I love them.’ It breaks my heart because his daughter is engaged, and now he won’t be able to see her get married.”

Cameron joined the security industry straight after school, determined to make a difference. He leaves behind his wife, children, family, and friends.

A separate memorial service was held on November 14 at Nuwe Lewe Boksburg.

Meanwhile, Warrant Officer Majang Skalkie confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with his murder.
