Security officer shot and killed in line of duty

The officer will be remembered for his bravery.

Tributes are pouring in for a senior reaction officer from Spot Watch Security (SWS), Jan Cameron, who was shot and killed in the early hours of Tuesday morning (November 6) while reportedly responding to a business robbery on Middle Road.

According to AJ Smith, a manager at SWS, the incident occurred at around 01:30.

“Although investigations are underway, it is alleged that Jan went out to assist with the business robbery and was shot as soon as he got out of his vehicle,” Smith said.

It is understood that the suspects fled in the direction of Farrarmere and did not manage to get away with any stolen goods.

Smith described Cameron as a loyal and selfless colleague.

“He has been working for SWS for many years. He wasn’t afraid to go out of his way for his colleagues. When someone asked for help, Jan didn’t hesitate; he just went for it. I believe many people will remember him as someone who never stood back,” he said.

In a statement, SWS said Cameron was a courageous officer whose bravery and dedication would never be forgotten.

“He embodied the values we hold dear at SWS: vigilance, honour, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. His absence leaves a deep void in our team and in the hearts of those who knew him,” the company said.

SWS extended its deepest condolences to Cameron’s wife and family.

“We grieve with you, and we honour the sacrifice he made. May you find comfort in the love that surrounds you and strength in the memories you shared. He will be missed not only as a colleague but as a brother in service. Jan’s legacy will live on in the work we continue and the lives he helped safeguard.”

Boksburg Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the police and is trying to reach out to his family.
