Death toll down on Easter roads
All provinces, bar the Northern Cape, recorded a decrease in road fatalities over Easter.
This past Easter season has seen a welcome decline in the number of road fatalities, preliminary reports indicate.
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters released the results in Pretoria this morning, The Citizen reported.
The report entails figures from 24 -28 March.
“The report indicates there were 156 fatalities this year compared to 287 fatalities for the same period last year. This represents a much welcome 46%decline,” said Peters.
All provinces recorded a decrease expect for the Northern Cape.
“North West recorded the highest decrease of 71% with the number of fatalities reduced from 28 to 8. They were followed by the Free State with a decrease of 52%, fatalities reduced from 23 to 11. KwaZulu Natal experienced a drop of 49% with fatalities reduced from 55 to 28,” Peters said.
The arrest of 913 person for dry keen driving and 502 for speeding, demonstrated concern the minister said.
“The highest speed record was in KZN travelling at 227km/h whilst in Gauteng the recorded speed was 206km/h.”
Two officers where arrested for soliciting a bribe and two others lost their lives – “killed by drivers who are reckless and do not value life,” Peters said.
