JMPD officer killed, eyewitness also shot dead

A woman who witnessed the incident was also killed while another witness is in a critical condition.

A Johannesburg Metro Police officer was gunned down on the corner of Boundary Road and Michigan Avenue in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg, on Friday.

A woman who witnessed the killing was also shot and killed, while a man in a taxi was critically injured, Westside-Eldos reported.

JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said the officer went to visit his mother before reporting for duty.

“When he was in his car, five men approached him and shot him in the head.

“The suspects saw a woman who witnessed the incident and also shot her. She died,” said Mamonyane

She said the motive for the shooting could be a robbery because the officer’s service pistol was stolen.

Mamonyane urged witnesses to come forward with information to assist in arresting the suspects.

“Our officers do their best to serve and protect communities. They are also a child, husband, wife, father and mother to somebody,” she added.

This after an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officer was shot and killed while fishing at a dam in Springs on the East Rand last Wednesday.

The body of Superintendent Coert Jordaan, 40, was found lying in the grass at Ashton Lake by an employee at about 2:30pm.

Jordaan was a member of the EMPD’s equestrian unit. He was on leave at the time of his death.

Springs police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora said the deceased was lying on his back and had stab wounds on the left side of his upper body.

“Upon further investigation the police found there was a struggle between the deceased and his attacker, and that a sharp object was used to stab Jordaan,” Ramphora said.

Paramedics responded to the scene and declared him dead on the scene. His vehicle and firearm were also stolen.

“It’s a very sad day for the EMPD, as we lost an important member of the Ekurhuleni Equestrian Unit,” acting EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Kobeli Mokheseng said.
