Brakpan police officers participated in Casual Day on September 4 in support of people living with disabilities.

This initiative, observed on the first Friday of September, encourages employees to wear casual clothes instead of their uniform to show solidarity with persons with disabilities.

“The Brakpan SAPS team not only promoted inclusivity, but they also helped raise funds for the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), which advocates for persons with disabilities’ rights and equitable opportunities,” said Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“From the 50 Casual Day stickers, 43 were sold, raising R680 towards the NCPD. Brakpan police officers wore burnt orange, the colour associated with the Casual Day stickers, symbolising comfort, creativity, and quiet confidence.

“SAPS is an organisation that embraces disability because they believe in the dignity, capability, and potential of every member.

“Brakpan SAPS believes in the power of inclusion, which is not just a policy but a principle. The SAPS has a commitment to equality as it is enshrined in our Constitution and does not see disability as a limitation but as part of the rich diversity that makes the organisation stronger.

“The SAPS encourages and inspires future recruits living with disabilities to see the SAPS as a place where they can belong, contribute, and grow.”

Buthelezi stated that embracing disability is not charity, it is justice.

“It is recognising that excellence comes in many forms. The SAPS urges the public to not only embrace disability in words but in action,” she said.
