DA mourns loss of Dr Gavin Lewis

The Brakpan Constituency of the Democratic Alliance is mourning the death of Dr Gavin Lewis, MPL, who passed away on Friday, last week, after a short illness.

Constituency chairperson Deon Joubert said he and all local members were shocked and saddened by the suddenness of Dr Lewis’s passing.

He reiterated the tribute paid by the DA’s national leader, Helen Zille, who said everyone’s thoughts and prayers were with Dr Lewis’s family and friends in this painful time.

Joubert worked closely with Dr Lewis in the Brakpan community, in his capacity as the political head of the constituency.

While the electoral system of the country does not have official constituency boundaries, the DA has an internal arrangement in which all MPs and MPLs are allocated to specific areas, to ensure that councillors, activists and members are visible and taking up the issues of residents.

Dr Lewis was deployed to the greater Brakpan constituency where he became a familiar face in the suburbs and townships during the DA’s many Blue Wave campaigns.

Dr Lewis was a long-standing member of the party and served as the DA’s spokesperson for Economic Development in the Gauteng Legislature. He had a passion for the economy, and was a regular contributor to economic policy debates inside the DA and in public.

He was a dedicated public servant who persevered and maintained his constant good spirits, even while battling with his illness.

His contributions and dedication to building our democracy will be sorely missed; both within the party and greater South African politics.

He is survived by his wife Colleen, and children Jonathan, Kate and Alexandra.
