Walk to help education

"Ten Thousand Feet for the Right to Education" is the mission that the 2013 Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk, taking place this Saturday in Bonaero Park, Kempton Park, aims to achieve.

The statement outlines the race organisers’ ambitious target to enlist at least 10 000 participants (10 000 pairs of feet) for the third annual walk.

The initiative is the first activity on Ekurhuleni’s October programme, which is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of the late struggle stalwart O R Tambo.

The official Race Walking League event will take place at the O R Tambo International Airport Sports Field, over distances of 21km, 10km and 5km.

However, the Liberation Walk is not just about health and fitness, it’s also about education.

Proceeds from the race will go towards charities and organisations involved in education, with the aim of ensuring that every child in South Africa is afforded their right to education. Residents are, therefore, encouraged to rally behind the Ten Thousand Feet for the Right to Education campaign, either by participating in the Walk, or by donating or pledging books, magazines or stationery.
