Jasmin murder accused appears in court
Crowds, outside the Brakpan Magistrates Courts on Tuesday morning, called for bail to be granted to a 23-year-old Brakpan man, so "we can do to him what he did to Jasmin".
The large group of protesters bayed for the blood of the accused, who allegedly confessed to raping and murdering his four-year-old niece, Jasmin Pretorius, on December 28, last year, when he made his second court appearance, on Tuesday.
Standing in the dock, dressed in a black and grey striped T-shirt, the man’s body was wracked with sobs and he wiped tears from his face.
He appeared before magistrate Khatija Abba, who informed him of his right to legal representation.
He requested to file for legal aid and the case was postponed to Monday (January 13).
The man remains in custody.
News of the postponement disappointed the crowds, who were hoping the man would be granted bail and that they could mete out their own justice.
“I will pay his bail,” shouted one woman.
“Just give him to us!”
