Brakpan SPCA warns public against scammers impersonating local society
Scammers use fake calls and video requests to record personal verification details and access private accounts.
The Brakpan SPCA is warning community members to be alert after receiving reports of scammers impersonating the local society.
According to the society, scammers are contacting people, asking them to join a video call and then read back a series of numbers or words.
This is an attempt to record a voice, face, or security verification codes to access personal accounts.
The SPCA stated it will never ask supporters to join a video call or read back OTPs, security codes, or specific words or numbers over the phone.
The society will only ever contact people from recognised organisation numbers, which are 011 742 2007, 071 695 3458 or 083 696 9052.
If residents receive a suspicious call or message claiming to be from the SPCA, they should not engage.
They are urged to block the sender and report the number directly on WhatsApp immediately.
