Update: Cash-in-transit robbers hijack vehicle

The men who robbed a cash-in-transit van at the Mall@Carnival yesterday morning continued with their crime spree and later hijacked a car.

According to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the fleeing suspects hijacked a grey Ford Focus after abandoning their white Volkswagen Polo.

“A look-out for the white Polo was broadcasted and both EMPD and SAPS members started searching for the vehicle,” said Kgasago.

“A short while after the robbery, the fleeing suspects hijacked the Focus in the area after abandoning their Polo.

“The EMPD Intervention Unit members spotted the hijacked vehicle with two male occupants on Leondale road in Spruitview and gave chase.

“On realizing that the metro police were hot on their heels, the suspects abandoned the Ford Focus and disappeared into the area.”

The recovered vehicle was taken to the SAPS Van Ryan Deep pound and the suspects are still at large.

Lama Ngwenya, the marketing co-ordinator of the Mall@Carnival, issued the following statement on behalf of the mall regarding the robbery:

“It appears that the suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

“Fortunately they were no injuries.

“The mall security and Brakpan SAPS secured the area and an investigation into the incident is underway.”
