According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan police station commander, the majority of these thefts are opportunistic.
“These crimes are not really planned, but the thief sees he has the chance and takes it,” he said.
“It’s just too easy.”
The most common of these cases involve items such as cellphones and laptops stolen from cars.
“In most of these cases, the cars weren’t even locked or the windows were left wide open,” said Joubert.
“It’s an invitation to thieves.”
He also pleaded with women to keep a close eye on their handbags when shopping.
“An unattended handbag in a shopping trolley is easy pickings for thieves,” said Joubert.
