Detectives commended for sterling work

Two Brakpan detectives have been commended by local police station management for excellent work and showing great expertise in their duties.

WO Albert van Wyk and Sgt Morné du Plessis were praised for successful convictions relating to an assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and a culpable homicide case.

Van Wyk helped to ensure the successful conviction of Daniel Mokgotla (32), who stabbed and injured his wife at their Kenleaf home in January, 2010.

Mokgotla was sentenced to five years imprisonment for assault GBH and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Du Plessis, in a case of culpable homicide, ensured that the accused, Sheldene Holtzhausen, was convicted and sentenced to eight months imprisonment, with the option of a R10 000 fine.

Half of the sentence was suspended for five years, on condition that she does not commit the same offence again.

This case stemmed from an accident involving three vehicles, along Athlone Avenue, in Dalview, on May 18, last year, in which one person was killed.
