Another power failure as substation burns

A reported explosion at the Van Eck substation has left large parts of Brakpan without power.

The power went off today at about 12.30pm, for the third time since Friday, last week.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the substation and curious bystanders, some with binoculars, gathered along the road side.

While on the scene, the Herald witnessed an ambulance, with flashing lights and sirens, speeding away.

The road to the substation has been cordoned off .

In a text message to the Herald, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality confirmed that there is a fire at the substation.

No explanation was provided and it is not known for how long the town will be without electricity.

Brakpan North is the only suburb not affected.

More information will follow once it becomes available.
