EMPD Choir hits the right notes
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department's Choir has developed into a formidable group that is now counted among long-standing choirs such as the JMPD and Soweto Choral Choirs.
The EMPD choir was established in 2007 and comprised 10 members.
It has since grown to 50 members.
According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the purpose of the choir is to:
* play a role during community safety memorial and funeral services,
* close the gap between the law enforcement fraternity and the communities they serve,
* educate the community about the police environment,
* engage in community activities and programmes,
* promote Batho Pele principles,
* ensure the well-being of employees through music.
“Orphanages and homes such as Tembisa Orphanage, Mohau Orphanage, Disabled Persons in Vosloorus and Tholakele Orphanage Home in KwaThema are some of the homes that have benefited greatly from the choir’s efforts in raising funds by organizing concerts and soliciting assistance from businesses and churches,” said Kgasago.
“Items donated included electrical appliances, blankets, clothing and groceries, among others.
“Choral festivals are held annually, with the aim of reducing the plight of these homes.”
