Emu on the run

An emu -- a large flightless bird native to Australia -- was found wandering around in a veld near Brakpan North on Friday, last week.

The bird is currently being cared for at the Brakpan SPCA.

According to Tanisha Fourie, from the SPCA, staff rushed to the scene after receiving a call about a “stray ostrich”.

“It wasn’t an ostrich, but a very tame, male emu,” said Fourie.

With the assistance of inspectors from the National Council of SPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit, and the Farm Animal Unit, the emu was safely loaded and transported to the society.

“He is very sweet and must belong to someone,” said Fourie, adding that no one has come forward to claim him.

Fourie told the Herald that if the bird is not reclaimed within the stray period (seven days), the SPCA will find a suitable home for him.
