The operation, which was conducted by EMPD Speed Unit members, was held along the R23 (Heidelberg Road), between Athlone Avenue and Rangeview Road, from 5am to 8am.
“A 51-year-old man in a Renault sedan, claiming that he was late for a fishing sojourn, was caught at around 5.15am doing 143km/h”, said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt, Wilfred Kgasago.
“The second highest speed registered in this operation was 137km/h, by a male driver in a Ford sedan, who cited that he was late for work as the reason.
“The third highest speed was 135km/h, by a male driver in an Audi sedan, who advanced the reason that he was rushing to a funeral.”
Twelve other motorists, who clocked speeds of between 117km/h and 126km/h, were also arrested during the operation.
“Dockets of reckless and negligent driving were registered against the 15 drivers at the Brakpan Police Station,” said Kgasago.
“All the arrested speedsters managed to post bail of between R500 and R1 000 for their release from the police cells.”
Last week saw EMPD officers issue hundreds of fines to motorists in Brakpan.
One hundred and fifty two drivers were fined for not having their driver’s licence with them in the vehicle, and 22 others were booked for having no valid professional driving permits.
One person was arrested for driving recklessly and another for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Eleven fines were issued for robot violations, one for a barrier line and 13 for using cellphones without a hands-free kit while driving.
One hundred and five fines were issued for parking and stopping offences, six for failing to stop and yield, and 14 motorists were booked for not wearing their safety-belts.
Thirty-seven drivers were fined for failure to renew their vehicle licences, seven for not displaying number plates and 42 for defects on their vehicles.
The EMPD also attended to 13 complaints and escorted two funerals.
