Boerewors competition kicks off today

Over 1000 boerewors-experts, boasting more than 1180 unique boerewors recipes will contend in the regional rounds of one of South Africa’s fiercest culinary battles - the 2014 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition.

The nerve-racking regional clashes take place today (Saturday), and August 16 and 23 at selected locations countrywide.

Regional rounds will be held at Shoprite Brakpan and Checker Hyper in the Mall@Carnival, from 9am.

Regional round participants need to go all out to impress the judges with their boerewors-making and cooking skills as only the first place winners of each of the 81 regional rounds will go on to compete against their provincial counterparts in 10 provincial rounds that take place nationwide on Saturday, September 13.

An independent judging panel, selected and trained by the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will judge each regional round where prospective boerewors champions have to provide 1kg of their own-recipe boerewors.

Half of this will be judged in raw format and the other half, entrants need to braai for the cooked judging.

The competition concludes on Saturday, October 4, when 10 finalists compete at Sun City’s Valley of Waves in a vigorous grand finale.

The Boerewors Champion will earn the sought-after 2014 Boerewors title and also drive away in a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider.

Members of the public are invited to go and watch as the boerewors-fundis battle it out in the regional rounds.

Between the sizzling fires and enticing boerewors smells, visitors will be entertained by local artists, and various lucky draws and giveaways will be held.

Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, will offer promotional activities and competitions on the day.

All entrants, supporters and Championship Boerewors enthusiasts are invited to share their excitement in searching for SA’s No.1 boerewors, by using #SAsNo1 in online conversations.
