Join free art and photography classes

The City of Ekurhuleni is inviting all amateur and wannabe artists, as well as photographers, to join free art and photography classes to be held by the Ekurhuleni Art Development School.

The art classes are open for youths between the ages of 15 and 25 years and will take place as follows:

* Geluksdal Library (Wednesdays, 2pm to 4.30pm);

* KwaThema Library Group Activity Room (Mondays and Tuesdays, 2pm to 4.30pm);

* Rhoo Hlatshwayo Art Centre (Daveyton, Wednesdays, 2pm to 4.30pm);

* Phomolong Community Hall (Tembisa, Mondays, 3pm to 5.30pm);

* Bokamoso Secondary School (Tembisa, Tuesdays, 2.30pm to 5pm).

The photography classes will be held only at the Duduza Library and are open to aspiring photographers aged between 13 and 35 years, residing in the eastern areas of Ekurhuleni, particularly Brakpan, Tsakane, Springs, KwaThema and Duduza.

Since its inception, the Ekurhuleni Art Development School Project has unearthed the vast potential and appreciation of the visual arts within the city.

The project serves the dual purpose of empowering out-of-school and unemployed youth through art, and also provides a valuable support base for learners whose schools do not offer art as a subject, or those who are interested in forging a career in visual arts, but do not have the necessary funds to pursue this ideal.

The art project will run from September to June 2015 at the aforementioned facilities, while photography will begin in September and end in May, next year.

All the classes are free of charge and cameras will be provided for photography students.

Candidates interested in the photography project, can contact Thabo Sekoaila on 011 999 8726/7, or via email at thabo.sekoaila@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

Sonja Sanders can also be contacted on 011 999 8821 or via email at sonja.sanders@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

Applications, which close on August 22, are available at the Springs Art Gallery, which is situated on the corner of Fifth Street and Sixth Avenue, in Springs.

For the art school, candidates need to contact Sonja Sanders or Lephina Hlangu on 011 999 4155 or 072 292 2015, or via email at lephina.hlangu@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

These applications close on August 29.
