UPDATE: ‘Drugs’ teacher gets bail

A 41-year-old primary school teacher, who was arrested over the weekend after he was allegedly caught red-handed buying drugs, has been released on bail.

The teacher, who is believed to be employed at a primary school in Elsburg, Germiston, was arrested on Saturday morning, last week, for being in possession of drugs.

He and five Nigerian nationals were arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s Germiston Crime Prevention Unit, following a tip-off.

The five Nigerians, aged between 24 and 29, and the teacher, appeared in the Brakpan Magistrates Court on Monday.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, told the Herald that the teacher and one of the foreign nationals were released on R500 bail each and that the case was postponed to Friday, March 20.

The case against the four other Nigerian men was not placed on the court roll and they were released.
