Boksburg Prison aces spelling bee challenge

Boksburg Correctional Centre inmates stole the show at this year's annual Ekurhuleni Spelling Bee competition, which was held at the prison on Thursday, last week.

Inmates impressed the judges and the audiences with their level of hard work, determination and the winning spirit portrayed on stage.

The competition had three categories, namely literate, semi-literate and illiterate, and each contestant was given 30 seconds to spell one word and five different words per round.

“The Spelling Bee is an exceptional way for the municipality to help to equip inmates with a skill that will be useful when they are reintegrated back into the community,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in Ekurhuleni, Clr Dorah Mlambo.

The competition aims to improve the levels of literacy among the inmates, as well as to broaden their intellectual capacity.

Mfanafuthi Hadebe, who is serving 12 years in the Boksburg Prison and took first position in the illiterate category said: “This competition helped me sharpen my spelling skills and pushed me to want to better my reading skills while I’m in here.”

Each contestant walked away with a medal and certificate of participation.
