Robber targets filling station in Dalview

A man dressed in a security uniform robbed a shop at a filling station along Glen Morgan Street, Dalview, this morning.

Two cashiers were on duty when the incident occurred. The man entered the shop at around 4am and pointed a firearm at one of the cashiers.

The suspect then took cash and cigarettes and fled on foot.

While the robbery was in progress, a motorist stopped at the garage and got out his vehicle.

The suspect pointed his firearm at the motorist who in turn dropped his phone and moved to the back of his vehicle.

The suspect took the phone, ran away and hid behind a power box situated along the street.

Another community member arrived at the garage in a bakkie and was told what had happened and where the suspect had gone.

Together, the two men went to the power box.

When they got there, the suspect fired several shots at them.

The two men left the bakkie idling and ran back to the garage.

The suspect got into the bakkie and attempted to flee, but about a kilometre down the road, he lost control of the vehicle.

“It is alleged that the suspect got out the bakkie, jumped over a wall, changed into civilian clothes and climbed into a security vehicle of a local security company,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

In his hurry to flee the scene, the suspect dropped the cash and cigarettes and it was recovered by the police.
