Suspected nyaope suppliers arrested

Information provided by members of the community led to the arrest of four suspects, believed to be acting as middlemen for supplying the dreaded nyaope drug in Tsakane.

The four were picked up on Tuesday (July 21), from four different locations, and an unlicensed firearm was found on one of them.

Two of the suspects were apprehended in Toyi-toyi Street, one in Conwell Street and the fourth in Sibiya Street.

“Unfortunately, the suspects had no drugs in their possession or at their homes,” said Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni EMPD.

“The Metro Police’s efforts were, however, not totally in vain, as one of the suspects was found to be in possession of a stolen 9mm pistol with live rounds.

“On arrival at Tsakane Police Station, preliminary probing revealed that the four have, for some time, been on a wanted list for a string of robberies in Tsakane.”

The four suspects’ ages range between 22 and 35 and one was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police are investigating the possibility that the others could be linked to other crimes.
