For some time now, no regular refuse collection has been done by the Metro.

The Herald requested urgent comment from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) regarding the situation.

In a short statement the spokesperson for the Metro, Themba Gadebe, said that the workforce at the Brakpan Waste Management Services depot embarked on a strike, because management was not prepared to implement their overtime demands without determining the cost implication thereof in relation to the value it would add.

“EMM is doing its utmost best to implement a contingency plan. The first contingency plan that was implemented was foiled due to intimidation by the Brakpan workforce,” said Gadebe.

The Herald will keep readers informed on any new developments.
