Brakpan Fire Station team assists in recovery of body found in ceiling

The man's body was found between the ceiling and the roof tiles of a residential property.

City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) Technical Rescue Teams from the Kwa-Thema and Brakpan fire stations recovered the partially decomposed body of a 25-year-old man at an address along Moeketsane Street in Kwa-Thema on October 23.

The man’s body was found between the ceiling and roof tiles of the home.

According to William Ntladi, media liaison for DEMS, crews responded swiftly after a walk-in activation by paramedics at the Brakpan Fire Station. While responding, the Kwa-Thema Technical Rescue Team was activated as well.

“On arrival, neighbours were engaged and apparently they were alerted by a smell and needed official intervention,” said Ntladi.

“The house dweller confirmed that he wasn’t aware of the situation.

“The teams searched and followed the smell and ultimately found the already partially decomposed body in between the ceiling and the roof tiles.”

Recovery was initiated and the body brought to the ground with a stretcher and ropes.

It is suspected the deceased was electrocuted as side-cutter pliers were allegedly found next to him and some snapped electric cable.

The scene was handed over to SAPS officers on scene.

Paramedics declared the man dead, and Forensic Pathology Services were called to the address for the removal of the body to a pathology facility in Springs.
