Thief brought Tweedy Park lift to a halt

The problem with the lifts at Tweedy Park is not due to the incompetency of the company that has been repairing them all along, but the actions of hooligans and thieves.

This is the latest comment from the Ekurhuleni Metro, regarding the ongoing saga of the broken lifts at the Tweedy Park Flats.

The metro has said in a statement that the frustration of the elderly at Tweedy Park has not gone unnoticed, and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is doing its utmost best to resolve the problem permanently.

“The recent malfunction of the lift was caused by a thief who, unfortunately this time around, was caught stripping off parts by the complex security staff,” said Temba Gadebe, spokesperson for the EMM.

The door to the lift was broken, and the parts were stripped and stolen through the door.

“Upon seeing the security guards, the culprit ran away and jumped over the high wall of the complex,” added Gadebe.

“While awaiting the formal and mass replacement of the lifts metro-wide, three quotations have been invited for the repairs, but only one was received.

”A memo has been submitted to the metro’s Finance Department, requesting acceptance of the quote to have the lifts repaired in the interim.”

“The security team has been requested to beef up their systems within the complex, pending both the replacement of the entire lift systems and the appointment of the complex caretaker,” said Gadebe.

The contract of the service provider has expired and the life span of the lifts has lapsed, and for that reason lifts should be replaced.

It is envisaged that the lifts will be replaced during the current financial year and budget has been allocated accordingly.
