Afrisun Trust gives local girls wings to travel the world

A 27-year-old Brakpan resident is one of three East Rand residents who are thrilled to have their feet back on home soil.

They have returned from an exciting 10-month stint, travelling the world by ship, a learning opportunity made possible by Carnival City’s Afrisun East Rand Community Trust.

Lucritia Yende, of Sunair Park, Modise Lebogang, a 25-year-old resident of Tembisa and Jennifer Hlongwane (23), also from Tembisa, were chosen by the Afrisun Trust to experience the opportunity of a lifetime.

The girls, from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, were awarded bursaries to study beauty technology (National Qualification Level 4) at the Hydro International College, in Edenvale.

After successfully completing their qualifications, which encompassed various beauty therapies, the trust sponsored their sea survival training in Cape Town.

This enabled them to undergo an intensive experiential training programme with Steiner Transoceans, which recruits therapists for cruise ships.

They left home in October, last year, to travel the world working aboard six-star cruise ships, gaining invaluable experience and expertise.

“This opportunity has allowed them to become financially independent and we hope to see more of our trust beneficiaries become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow,” said Pumla Mutle, Afrisun Trust CEO.

“The success of the programme is due to the commitment of the participants and the institutions who supported them through their studies and training.”

“We are proud to say that Hydro International has helped to give them the solid foundation upon which to continue building their skills, and the Afrisun East Rand Community Trust has given them wings and independence.

“We applaud their achievements and are excited to welcome them home,” added Mutle.

Lucritia told the Herald that she had the time of her life.

“I enjoyed meeting so many different people from all over the word,” she said.

“It was also interesting to listen what the guests had to say about South Africa.

“It has most definitely been a life changing experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me by the Afrisun Trust.”
