Ekurhuleni welcomes New Year’s Day newborns

Five baby boys were born at Pholosong Hospital on New Year's Day.

There is no better way to start a brand new year than to give birth to a healthy baby.

This is the sentiment shared by elated mothers who gave birth on New Year’s Day.

On Friday morning, last week, Ekurhuleni’s Members of the Mayoral Committee, together with the the metro’s senior officials, visited three hospitals to welcome and present the newborn babies with essential baby goodies.

Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Sport Recreation, Arts and Culture Clr Dora Mlambo led the delegation’s first leg of the visits at Pholosong Hospital in Tsakane to hand out baby hampers to the mothers and to congratulate them on their bundles of joy.

The newborns received their first gifts which included Ekurhuleni branded bathtubs, baby blankets and essential baby products.

Speaking to the mothers, Mlambo emphasised the importance of breastfeeding.

“Remember that mother’s milk is the best, I urge you to breastfeed these babies until they are strong enough to eat ordinary foods,” she said.

“Also remember to register for the baby’s birth certificates before leaving the hospital.”

Pholosong Hospital welcomed five baby boys on New Year’s Day between 1am and 2am.

The Ekurhuleni delegation then proceeded to the Far East Rand Hospital where Mlambo and MMC for Human Settlements, Clr Aubrey Nxumalo, handed over baby hampers to the mothers.

The overjoyed Simphiwe Modau was the first mother to give birth to Sifiso Modau at 12.42am.

“I wish to thank the Far East Rand Hospital for assisting us with love and care through this beautiful, yet overwhelming period of giving birth and caring for us even after the process,” she said.

“I am also very grateful to the municipality for the baby hamper, it means a lot to me and I will always cherish this moment with my baby.”

The Far East Rand Hospital also welcomed five baby boys between midnight and 3am.

To conclude the congratulatory hospital visits, MMC for Economic Development Clr Thumbu Mahlangu and the delegation visited Tembisa Hospital, where the first five babies – two girls and three boys – were delivered between midnight and 7.30am.
